Humane Moment

Filth-smeared children
Begging for some coins
Passed out strangers
Fallen by the roadsides
Poor platform-dwellers’
Fights for daily survival
Plight of old orphans
Pleading for little food
Distressing deaths of
Distant lands’ people –
My callous mind
Now cares for no one
Yet a tiny helpless ant
Moving by my restless feet
Stirs a bit of humaneness
Reminding me the serene face
Of the smiling Buddha!

  1. Life is so full of interesting ironies. All of us become aware of the innumerable incidents daily where humanity is insulted in more than one ways - rapes, murders, genocides, hunger deaths, poverty and so much more. Most of us have become so indifferent and callous that we can no more perceive the pains of anyone except our own. However, whenever we see a small, helpless insect like an ant crawling around we simply avoid trampling it. I felt such an emotion during one of my morning walks. This poem is an expression of that emotion.
